How to find legislation currently in force, rather than just an old law

Finding a law is easy. Finding the provision that applies today is much more demanding. A common mistake is to find an old text, read a paragraph and assume the research is complete.

Make the question specific

Before starting, turn your topic into a specific question. Instead of asking what applies to leases, define the type of lease, the person concerned, the relevant period and the practical outcome you want to check.

The clearer the question, the easier it is to distinguish relevant provisions from irrelevant ones.

Start with the official source

Search engines are excellent for finding keywords and possible references, but final confirmation must return to the official text.

Note the law or act number, article, Gazette issue and date. Then check whether newer acts amend the same point.

Amendments are the difficult part

Legislation evolves through additions, replacements, exceptions and transitional rules. A statement that was correct two years ago may be incomplete today.

Keep a short record of the provision's history: the original provision, known amendments, commencement date and any special exceptions.

Use a research checklist

A consistent checklist significantly reduces mistakes, especially when you research regularly.

  • What is the precise practical question?
  • What is the main provision?
  • Where was it officially published?
  • Are there newer amendments?
  • Is there a more specific provision for this case?
  • When did the change come into force?
  • Is professional interpretation needed before a decision?

Good AI research should show its path

A useful AI system should organise the question, display relevant sources, distinguish what is certain from what needs checking, and lead you back to the official text alongside its conclusion.

AI then becomes a research tool whose answers the user can verify.
